What the scanner reads, and how to stay safe

The scanner reads standard QR codes and shows what is inside them before anything happens. It recognises the common formats and labels them for you: web links, WiFi logins (with the network name, security type and password shown separately), contact cards, email and SMS drafts, phone numbers, locations and calendar events. Anything else is shown as plain text that you can copy.

Check links before you open them

A QR code can point anywhere, and a sticker can be placed over a real code. Before you tap Open link, read the address. Be careful with shortened links you do not recognise, addresses that misspell a well-known brand, and any page that asks for a password or payment details right after a scan. If a code on a parking meter or a poster asks you to pay, go to the official website or app instead.

Scanning from a screenshot or photo

Use Upload image for a code in a screenshot, a PDF you have saved as an image, or a photo. The code should be in focus and not too small in the picture. If it fails, crop the image around the code and try again. The image is read on your device and is not uploaded.

Camera tips

Hold the phone or laptop steady, fill most of the frame with the code, and avoid reflections from glossy paper or screens. Very dense or heavily styled codes are harder to read. If a code you made will not scan, the guide QR code not scanning lists the usual causes.

How do I scan a QR code on a laptop?

Click "Start camera", allow camera access, and hold the code in front of your webcam. Or save the image and use "Upload image".

Can I scan a QR code from a screenshot?

Yes. Choose "Upload image" and select the screenshot or photo. The code is read on your device.

Is it safe?

The scanner only reads the code and shows its content; it never opens links automatically. Check a link before you open it, as QR codes can point anywhere.

Why does the camera not start?

The browser needs permission to use the camera, and the page must be loaded over https://. If you blocked the permission, allow it in your browser's site settings.

Are my images uploaded?

No. Decoding happens in your browser, using the built-in barcode detector where available and an open-source decoder otherwise.
